2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Buyer's Guide
Alfa Romeo is one of the most storied of European automotive brands. With a legacy of motorsports going back to the very beginnings of Formula 1, Alfa Romeo boast the estimable Enzo Ferrari among the people responsible for helming its racing efforts over the years. When this company introduces a new sports car, everyone sits up and takes notice. Its current effort, the Alfa Romeo 4C is without question the purest expression of a racing car for the street currently offered by a mainstream manufacturer. The small mid-engined sports car is fashioned around a carbon fiber tub for exceptional lightness, with only modest considerations given to creature comforts. This car is all about driving quickly—and very little else. It’s an unalloyed sports car experience.
What makes it move?
The mid-mounted 1750 cc (1.7-liter) turbocharged inline four cylinder engine powering the Alfa 4C’s rear wheels produces 240 horsepower and 258 ft-lbs of torque between 2,200 rpm and 4,000 rpm. The wet sump engine uses an intercooler for the turbocharger. The transmission is a six-speed dual dry clutch semi automatic with paddle shifting and launch control. The dual clutch design means the driveline remains engaged during shifts for acceleration with no hesitation between gear changes. The Alfa’s driving mode selector offers four levels of responsiveness.
Why buy the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C?
The steering, while not power assisted, transmits all the information you need about the road surface and cornering loads. The low seating position places you literally inches above the road, so you feel as if you’re part of the car as you hurtle along. And that’s exactly what happens. The 4C weighs approximately 2,400 pounds, so the engine has more than enough power to fling you along at pretty much any velocity you desire. Grip is absolutely amazing, and the brakes feel like they’re related to a brick wall—that’s how well they stop the car. In other words, if you like to drive, you’ll love driving the Alfa Romeo 4C. Make no mistake though, this car is all about the sports car driving enthusiast.
