What's New for the 2004 Cadillac CTS?
Two major developments add desirability to the polarizing 2004 Cadillac CTS. First, Cadillac has created a hot-rodded version called the CTS-V to battle the likes of the Audi S4, the BMW M3, the Mercedes C32 AMG and others. With 400 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque available from its 5.7-liter, Chevrolet Corvette-derived V8 engine, the Cadillac CTS-V ought to knock the socks off of all who drive it. Also included with the CTS-V are Brembo brakes, 18-inch wheels, revised suspension tuning and a six-speed manual transmission. Second, a new 3.6-liter VVT (variable valve timing) engine is standard with the five-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes 255 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 252 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,200 rpm. Finally, Cadillac has revised the suspension to provide a smoother ride without any loss of handling ability, and a Sport package with new 17-inch alloy wheels, stability control, performance brake linings, variable-assist steering and rear load leveling is available. Inside, chrome accents have been added, a temperature gauge resides in the cluster, and bright white interior lighting is new.

Advantages of the 2004 Cadillac CTS:

  • Excellent handling and steering
  • Supple ride quality
  • Perfect driving position and comfortable seats
  • Astounding performance with the Cadillac CTS-V

Objections to the 2004 Cadillac CTS:

  • Incongruous rear design elements
  • Interior materials could use improvement
  • Rearward visibility is poor

Editor's Advice:
Right from the start, the Cadillac CTS has been a better car than most would admit. With this year's improvements to the suspension and powertrain, as well as the addition of the powerful CTS-V, naysayers will have little about which to gripe save the controversial styling theme. Our primary concerns with the 2004 Cadillac CTS would be its unproven reliability and the potential that it will lose its value quickly. Otherwise, you should test drive this car.
