The 2004 Nissan Armada rolls into the new year as Nissan’s first full-size SUV. Based on the Nissan Titan half-ton pickup truck, the Pathfinder Armada offers room for eight; a standard 305-horsepower, 5.6-liter V8 engine that cranks out 385 pound-feet of torque and helps supply a best-in-class tow rating of 9,100 pounds; and up to 97 cubic feet of cargo carrying space.

To battle these segment stalwarts, the 2004 Nissan Armada offers rugged design, refined interior materials and luxurious accommodations: even the base SE models get such niceties as 18-inch alloy wheels, a tire-pressure monitoring system, stability control, side curtain airbags, power-adjustable pedals, back-up obstacle warning sensors and an in-dash CD changer. Step up to the LE model and receive heated leather seats, a power driver’s seat with memory, second-row bucket seats, seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants and a premium stereo system. Goodies like a DVD-based navigation system, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a power lift rear hatch are optional. Given the fact that most SUV owners use their vehicles for carting their nuclear families around town, though, you’ve got to wonder about the appeal of the Nissan Armada’s massive size and truck-like driving characteristics. Still, for those who need the bragging rights for the best tow rating, prodigious occupant space and competent off-road abilities, the Armada is a fresh, formidable contestant in the full-size SUV smackdown.
