What's New for the 2004 Toyota 4Runner?
For 2004, the Toyota 4Runner now offers an optional third row seat on the Limited and SR5 models, bumping passenger capacity to seven. Also, a backup camera to avoid accidents while reversing is available with the navigation system. The SR5 and Sport Edition models, formerly saddled with lots of gray plastic cladding, are now dressed with black running boards and color-keyed front and rear bumpers, overfenders, and side trim as standard equipment.

Advantages of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner:

  • Optional third-row seat
  • Strong boulder-bashing ability
  • Composed on-road driving manners
  • Power roll-down tailgate window
  • Reputation for reliability

Objections to the 2004 Toyota 4Runner:

  • Fussy climate control buttons
  • Cargo capacity not as generous as its competitors

Editor's Advice:
One of the venerable forebears of the SUV trend, today’s 2004 Toyota 4Runner is a civilized people-hauler while retaining the tough, rugged character and authentic off-roading ability that originally helped it reach popularity. Two engines are available to power the 4Runner; the 4.0-liter V6 produces 245 horsepower and 283 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 4.7-liter V8 actually makes 10 less ponies at 235 but takes up the slack with its 320 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity is rated at 5,000 pounds for both engines. For the few people who actually do take their SUVs off-road, the Toyota 4Runner is a durable choice.
