What's New for the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta?
For 2004, the Volkswagen Jetta receives a freshening for the exterior, including chrome strips on the front grille and bumpers, aluminum body side moldings, a redesigned trunk-lid finisher and new taillights. Volkswagen’s much-improved 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine that pumps out 100 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque (an increase of 10 and 22 from the previous version, respectively) may be mated with a five-speed automanual transmission. The 2.0-liter engine now boasts a PZEV rating. Top-of-the-line GLI models ride on new 17-inch alloy wheels and have a standard Cold Weather package with heated front seats. Shiny cluster rings brighten up the dash display, and OnStar telematics is an option for all VW Jettas.

Advantages of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta:

  • Posh interior materials
  • Driving dynamics unerringly German
  • Four powertrains let you choose the one most suited to your needs
  • Available as a sedan or wagon
  • Full complement of safety features

Objections to the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta:

  • Adding options can delete the word “economy” from its class designation
  • Tight rear seat accommodations
  • Standard 2.0-liter engine lacks guts

Editor's Advice:
While the Volkswagen Jetta remains under the radar for the mass hordes seeking a compact economy sedan, those in the know realize that it’s a step above the run-of-the-mill econobox juggernaut. With a range of engine options such as a diesel engine, an inline four with or without turbo power, and a six-cylinder powerplant in the GLI trim, there’s a Jetta to fit your need, as long as you keep an eye on the bottom line. A wagon variant exists for those seeking more hauling capacity, all in a stylish package that’s attractive inside and out. Now in its fifth year, the current-generation VW Jetta is due for a complete revamp, so look for a new version to debut in 2005 or 2006.
