What's New for the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid?
The all-new 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid is the first gas/electric hybrid SUV to hit the market. Offering the performance of a V6 but the fuel economy of a four-cylinder, the hybrid system enables this Escape to run on its gasoline engine, electric power, or a combination of both. A regenerative braking system recharges the 330-volt battery pack when the vehicle slows, so it never has to be "plugged in." Similar in style to the 2005 Ford Escape, the Hybrid version gets nearly double the fuel economy of its V6 brethren, while emitting fewer hydrocarbons.

Advantages of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid:

  • Eco-friendly powertrain
  • Federal tax credit of $1,500
  • Power of a V6; fuel economy of a four

Objections to the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid:

  • Can't match EPA fuel economy ratings of other hybrids
  • Initially available only on the East and West Coast
  • Costly-to-repair electronics

Editor's Advice:
With the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid, environmentally-aware consumers who wish to carry lots of cargo can now have their cake and eat it too. Factor in Toyota-sourced technology, fuel-sipping economy and lower tailpipe emissions, and the Escape Hybrid is a great value even at its near $27,000 base price. The Escape Hybrid would bode well for urbanites, where only the electric motor could be used during stop-and-go traffic. And unlike other hybrids, the Escape Hybrid, when equipped with the Intelligent 4WD system, is a capable soft-roader, and can easily tackle a winter full of snow.
