Editor's Advice: Call it an acquired taste; we're fans of the 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Despite the fact that it is based on the same platform that underpinned the original 1991 Explorer SUV, we find the rough-riding Sport Trac to possess an authentic character that modern crossovers cannot match. Plus, the Sport Trac can cover ground off-road that might stymie some competitors. But just because we like it doesn't mean we can recommend it. The Explorer Sport Trac can't match the functionality of the Chevrolet Avalanche's midgate system, and with new crew cab pickups from Chevrolet, Dodge, GMC, Nissan, and Toyota out this year, the Sport Trac is going to be a tough sell. Add to that the NHTSA's worst rating for rollovers (2WD models only), and we'd advise that you consider something else.
