What's New for the 2005 GMC Sierra 1500?
The 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 gets a power upgrade for its Vortec 5300 V8; it now makes 310 horsepower at 5200 rpm, up from 295, but only on extended cab models equipped with 4WD. Painted six-lug 17-inch wheels are newly standard on Work Truck models, and chrome- or aluminum-finish six-lug wheels make a debut on selected trims. A 3.23 rear axle ratio is standard on 2WD models this year, but you can no longer get Quadrasteer with this configuration. Standard across the line is an upgraded 145-amp alternator; get the Snow Plow Prep package for a 160-amp alternator. GMC dumps the formerly standard rear disc brakes for drums, an obvious downgrade of equipment. A new power sunroof option includes a HomeLink universal transmitter and an overhead console on extended cab and crew cab models. Deep Blue Metallic paint debuts for 2005.

Advantages of the 2005 GMC Sierra 1500:

  • Stout powertrain combinations
  • Slick Quadrasteer option
  • Rear seat DVD entertainment on crew cab model
  • Wide variety of configurations from which to choose
  • Ever-present rebates and incentives lower the prices

Objections to the 2005 GMC Sierra 1500:

  • Front seat comfort could be improved
  • Interior materials look and feel inexpensive
  • Structural rigidity not up to the standards in the class
  • Rear drum brakes

Editor's Advice:
Truck buyers are a brand-loyal bunch, and so our advice likely won't sway any decisions. We like the GMC Sierra's engines, transmissions and feature content. We don't like the GMC Sierra's interior materials or seat comfort. Plus, newer trucks from Dodge, Ford and Nissan are built on sturdier frames and exhibit better structural rigidity. Bottom line: if you're a GMC truck fan, nothing but a Sierra will do. Our money is on the Dodge, Ford or Nissan.
