What's New for the 2005 Mazda RX-8?
Since the 2005 Mazda RX-8 debuted a year ago, few changes are in store for 2005. A satellite-radio-compatible audio system is new, and a Whitewater Pearl exterior color that replaces last year's Lightning Yellow. Mid-year, Mazda began offering the Shinka Edition. Named for a Japanese word meaning "evolution," Shinka versions of the 2005 RX-8 get a revised suspension with upgraded shocks, Parchment leather interior trim, a new wheel treatment, and different bezels for lights front and rear. Mazda will produce just 2,150 Shinka RX-8s this year.

Advantages of the 2005 Mazda RX-8:

  • Brakes offer right-now levels of effectiveness
  • Telepathic steering and crisp response
  • Design character inside and out
  • Excellent front seat comfort with real adult-sized rear seats
  • Useful control layout

Objections to the 2005 Mazda RX-8:

  • Lacks torque, resulting in unimpressive off-the-line acceleration even with the manual
  • Lousy fuel economy given small motor
  • Engine uses oil; check it regularly
  • Tall adults don't fit in back when tall adults are in front

Editor's Advice:
The 2005 Mazda RX-8 embodies the talent that makes nearly every Mazda product dear to the enthusiast's heart – it can carve a line with astounding finesse. Add to that a useful and comfortable interior, look-at-me styling, incredible build quality, and deep dealer discounts, and the Mazda RX-8 is one of the most appealing – and unique – sports cars to come along in awhile.
