What's New for the 2005 Subaru Baja?
The 2005 Subaru Baja is pretty much a carryover, save for small changes. A new hard bed cover comes standard with the Turbo Leather package. All models are now pre-wired for the optional roof rack lights, and you'll find a 12-volt outlet in the center console. You will now know when you're not driving in all-wheel drive mode, thanks to a warning light in the gauges.

Advantages of the 2005 Subaru Baja:

  • Powerful turbocharged engine infuses the Baja with surprising verve
  • Switchback System cargo pass-through allows for long items like skis and surfboards to be carried with the tailgate closed
  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • Comfortable enough for four adults

Objections to the 2005 Subaru Baja:

  • Ultimate Switchback System utility compromised by fixed rear window glass
  • Ultimate functionality can be called into question due to low payload, towing and cargo toting capabilities
  • Polarizing styling cues

Editor's Advice:
Subaru has removed the rearmost glass and roof from an Outback, added an extended pickup bed, slathered on contrasting cladding, pasted a unique grille to the front end, and conjured a new name to create its latest crossover vehicle. The 2005 Subaru Baja is similar in many respects to the Chevrolet Avalanche in concept, but the execution is not nearly as successful. Its Switchback System cargo pass-through simply extends the cargo bed floor; the Baja's fixed rear glass limits usefulness. Also, because it's based on a car and not a truck, the Baja's ultimate cargo, payload and towing capacities are limited. Furthermore, the polarizing exterior styling does little to entice buyers looking for a vehicle that can do it all, including fitting in at that chi-chi downtown eatery. Subaru steadily improves the Baja, but its high price, compromised utility, limited off-road capability and odd appearance make the Baja an acquired taste, indeed.
