What's New for the 2005 Subaru WRX?
Subaru has redesigned the interior of the 2005 WRX, installing a new dashboard, center console, door panels, and other comfort and convenience features. Automatic climate control is standard for 2005, as is a 140-watt premium sound system with an in-dash CD changer. New 10-spoke alloy wheels debut, aluminum rear suspension components reduce unsprung weight, and the muffler is larger with a fatter outlet for a more resonant exhaust note. The muscular 2005 Subaru WRX STi receives the same updates as the regular WRX, plus a security system with engine immobilzer, high-friction seat fabric, and blue door panel inserts. The STi's performance is enhanced through a new steering rack with a "cannon mount" for optimum precision and road feel, revised programming for the AWD system, a new helical-type limited slip differential, and wider 17x8-inch BBS alloy wheels. Other hardware upgrades include a wider rear track, improved brake pedal feel, a reduction in strut jounce and rebound by 10mm, and a three-point rear crossmember mount. A new underbody shield adds stability at higher speeds.

Advantages of the 2005 Subaru WRX:

  • Any model is fun, but jaw-dropping performance is standard with the STi model
  • WRX is available in wagon or sedan form
  • All-wheel drive surefootedness

Objections to the 2005 Subaru WRX:

  • Cramped driving position for those with inseams above 32 inches
  • Brutishly rough ride for daily commutes
  • Cramped rear seat accommodations

Editor's Advice:
The 2005 Subaru WRX is an honest sports sedan with rally car breeding that plants a fat smile on the face of all who drive one. The WRX STi is brilliant, a sports car wrapped in what would be an anonymous sedan cloak were it not for the huge rear decklid wing. Not only is the STi one of the best performing cars sold in the United States, but it also offers significant bang-for-the-buck. Test-drive it back-to-back with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and just try to wipe that grin off your face.
