What's New for the 2005 Volkswagen Golf?
In anticipation of the eventual debut of a completely redesigned Golf, which is not slated to arrive sometime in the fall of 2005, the current iteration is carried over from 2004 without significant changes.

Advantages of the 2005 Volkswagen Golf:

  • Impressive cargo space
  • Nimble handling characteristics
  • Extra features, such as side-curtain airbags, go above and beyond most economy hatchbacks

Objections to the 2005 Volkswagen Golf:

  • Last year of the current generation – you may want to wait for a brand new 2006 iteration
  • Pricier than other cars in the compact hatchback class
  • 2.0-liter engine is lethargic and wheezy, especially when paired with the four-speed automatic transmission

Editor's Advice:
Now in its seventh and final year (unless VW pushes the new Golf's debut back once again), the current-generation Volkswagen Golf has persevered as the one constant in the roller coaster hatchback movement. We're happy that these compact, practical cars are hot again, but numerous competitors are vying for your cargo carrying needs, and the rather expensive Golf is showing its age. Yet with an elegant interior, plenty of passenger and cargo capacity, and two- or four-door configurations, the current VW Golf still appeals to city dwellers who need to get around town with a bit of style mixed in with sensibility. Powering the Golf is a choice of two powerplants: a 2.0-liter engine with 115 horsepower or a 1.9-liter turbodiesel churning out 100 horsepower. Those seeking a bit more zoom from the engine room will want to go for the GTI version, which offers the choice of a turbocharged inline four or a V6 engine. Better yet, wait a little while for the all-new fifth-generation Volkswagen Golf, which is bigger and better in all aspects.
