What's New for the 2005 Volkswagen Passat? Volkswagen has finally killed the overpriced Passat W8, a car that answered a question nobody asked. Remaining GL, GLS and GLX models see a handful of changes for 2005. Larger standard wheels and tires are added to the GLS (16-inch) and GLX (17-inch) models, and GLS models also get a standard Cold Weather package and stability control. VW has cancelled the velour upholstery on the GL and GLS, replacing it with leatherette (aka vinyl). Passat GL can no longer be outfitted with the Cold Weather package or a Monsoon audio system, and the telematics system that came standard on the GLX is gone from the equipment list. Also dropped for 2005 is the gray shade band from the windshield, and the protective film on the top of the station wagon's bumper. Several paint colors also disappear: Pacific Blue, Blue Spirit, Blue Silver, Candy White, Northern Green and Samoa Red all vanish for 2005. Advantages of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat:
- Wide range of engine choices
- Available in sedan or wagon, front-wheel or all-wheel drive
- Premium build quality and materials
Objections to the 2005 Volkswagen Passat: - Depending on options, the price can veer from a good bargain to a wannabe luxury sedan.
- Not as much rear seat room as competitors
- Some luxury items, such as a navigation system, are not available
Editor's Advice: Those seeking a family sedan will not have shopped smart without driving the 2005 Volkswagen Passat, a perennial favorite of critics and owners alike despite its rapidly advancing age (it's been on the market with few changes since 1998). With a refined interior and driving dynamics that mimic its more expensive German brethren without detracting from smooth-riding family comfort, the VW Passat is regarded in many circles as a sophisticated alternative to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. You can have your choice between three engines; a turbodiesel, a turbo inline four, or a V6 mated to either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. With a myriad of safety and luxury features, you'll feel more attached to your Volkswagen Passat than to your average family conveyance.
