What's New for the 2006 Chevrolet Impala? The Chevrolet Impala picks up a number of major improvements for 2006. Those familiar with this large family sedan will immediately notice the new front-end styling, new wheel designs and new taillights. More significant, though, is what's underneath the Impala's hood. Last year's fuel-efficient but relatively underpowered V6s have been replaced by two new V6s with variable valve timing. There's a 211-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 for the entry-level LS and mid-grade LT trim and a 240-hp 3.9-liter V6 that's standard on the new luxury-oriented LTZ trim and optional on the LT. The performance-oriented SS trim, meanwhile, brings a small-block V8 back to the Impala nameplate for '06; it churns out 303 hp. The Impala's interior also benefits from upgrades. The instrument panel has a new wraparound look, the seats have improved upholstery and there's a new flip-and-fold design for the rear seat. Rounding out the Impala's changes are new feature upgrades like an enhanced antilock braking system, standard dual-stage front airbags, standard side-curtain airbags, improved audio systems with auxiliary jacks and an optional remote starter.
Advantages of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala:
- Large interior with six-passenger capability
- Standard V6 power and a V8 for the SS trim
- Well equipped for the price
- Big trunk
Objections to the 2006 Chevrolet Impala: - Still shy on refinement when compared to other top family sedans
- Front-drive configuration limits the effectiveness of the SS's V8
Editor's Advice: The Impala's upgrades for 2006 are most welcome. Though a General Motors cynic could point out that Honda's Accord has had variable valve timing for 12 years now, there's no denying that the Impala's new engines are some of the most powerful in the family sedan market. (It's just a shame that the Impala finally gets its V8 back only to have it shunt its power to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic.) With its better interior design and new features, the '06 Impala is worth a look, particularly for those buyers who favor interior space more than premium trim or a fancy navigation system.
