What's New for the 2006 Kia Rio?
The Kia Rio sedan and Kia Rio5 hatchback have been fully redesigned for 2006. Improvements to interior space, handling, power, and safety are all part of the upgrade. The 2006 Kia Rio, despite being about the same length as the 2005 version, has an airier cabin. The gain in interior room is possible thanks to a lengthened wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks. These changes have also improved the car's handling stability and ride comfort. For power, the new Kia Rio features an updated version of the previous 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. Now with variable valve timing for improved performance and fuel economy, the engine produces 110 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. EPA fuel-mileage ratings for a manual-equipped Rio sedan are 32 city/35 highway. Every Rio comes standard with front side airbags, head-protecting side curtain airbags and three-point belts at every seating position. Kia offers the Rio sedan in two trim levels: base and LX. Naturally, the LX is more desirable as it's the version with air conditioning, a CD player, tilt steering, a split-folding rear seatback, and rear headrests. The LX also grants access to additional options such as power windows, locks and mirrors; keyless entry; and antilock brakes with rear discs instead of drums. The Rio5 hatchback's equipment is similar to that of the LX sedan but also includes bigger wheels and tires, fog lights, a rear spoiler, and metallic interior highlights.

Advantages of the 2006 Kia Rio:

  • Roomy interior
  • Strong performance for a car of this class
  • Standard side and side-curtain airbags
  • Long powertrain warranty

Objections to the 2006 Kia Rio:

  • Uninspiring handling ability
  • Can't get ABS on the base trim level

Editor's Advice:
It wasn't that long ago that buying a cheap subcompact car was kind of like visiting a proctologist: You did it because you had to, not because you wanted to. But the 2006 Kia Rio changes things. No longer a Korean penalty box, the Rio is a car that you can actually show to your friends without feeling overwhelming shame. It's got enough power for everyday driving, the interior is roomy, all the basic features are there and the LX model will come off the dealer lot for about $13,000. Buying a used stalwart like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for the same money might still a viable option but the Rio is nevertheless a very attractive buy.
