What's New for the 2006 Lexus RX 400h? Based on the Lexus RX 330, this new gas/electric hybrid SUV blends the performance of a V8 with the fuel economy of a compact sedan, all while meeting Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) regulations. Incorporating a new Hybrid Synergy Drive system that combines a 3.3-liter V6 engine with high-torque electric motor-generators front and rear, the 2006 Lexus RX 400h provides all-weather, on-road, all-wheel-drive capability. Externally, the RX 400h features a revised grille, a new front fascia with additional air intake, sporty round fog lamps, unique 18-inch alloy wheels and LED tail lamps. Inside, brushed aluminum accents replace wood trim, and a power meter replaces the tachometer. The RX 400h also features specific suspension tuning for sportier handling. Advantages of the 2006 Lexus RX 400h:
- Impressive off-line power
- Even more impressive fuel economy
- Buttery-smooth CVT transmission
- Lavishly furnished interior
- Exudes refinement
Objections to the 2006 Lexus RX 400h: - High price tag to help save the environment
- Electric drive motors batteries deplete quickly on grades
- Not a capable off-roader
Editor's Advice: Leave it to Lexus to bring a luxury hybrid to market first, and an SUV at that. The 2006 RX 400h embodies all that a discriminating buyer would want: a sumptuous interior, ample cargo-carrying capacity, sleek styling, and plenty of power. But this Lexus goes the extra mile, delivering impressive fuel economy and nearly zero exhaust emissions. The only things RX 400h owners will have to give up are a few trips to the fuel pump and some extra dollars from their bank account. Not a bad trade, that.
