What's New for the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta? Volkswagen fully redesigned the Jetta midway through 2005 and makes additional updates this year. Most significant is the addition of two new trim levels: 2.0T and GLI. These Jetta versions come with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed DSG automatic is optional. The main difference between the 2.0T and GLI is that the GLI comes with a standard sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels, HID headlights, and a blacked-out grille. Other additions to the Jetta for 2006 include an available DVD-based navigation system, optional dual-zone climate control, a multi-function trip computer, and an optional 115-volt power outlet. Advantages of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta:
- Healthy list of standard and available safety features
- Multiple engine options
- Roomy rear seat
- Comfortable front seats
Objections to the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta: - Premium pricing for popular models
- Standard 2.5i engine lacks power and makes too much noise
Editor's Advice: Though we're not fond of the Jetta's new styling, there's no denying that this is a very competent package from Volkswagen. With all of its latest improvements, the feature-laden and safe Value Edition looks promising, and should be especially attractive to young professionals. But that all changes when the options get added on and the price jumps northwards of $27,000. Sharing the stage at that level are premium brands like Acura and Volvo, not to mention fully-loaded versions of the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and Nissan Altima. Judged among this pack, the Jetta is frequently outgunned in terms of power, handling, brand cachet, or value – or all four.
