Exclusive Video and Spy Photos: 2009 BMW Z4 Roadster

BMW is getting closer to unveiling the 2009 Z4 Roadster and more spy photos are cropping up across the Internet. Today I was in the right place at the right time and able to see the next Z4 up close and in person. Driving along the famous 405 freeway in Orange County, California, I detected a car approaching from behind that looked a little out of place. I reduced my speed and allowed it to catch up – instantly recognizing it as the future BMW Z4 as it closed the distance between us. Like a seasoned pro, I reached down and quickly pulled out my camera and started snapping spy photos and taking spy video.

The 2009 BMW Z4 is longer and wider than the current model. It retains most of the design of the current version on the exterior, but the interior has been given an update. Driving in my high-riding SUV I was able to peer down into the new Z4 and see BMW's controversial iDrive controller and a large (probably 8-inch) screen for the iDrive interface and navigation. Although it's difficult to tell from the body cladding, this Z4 does appear to have a folding hardtop, similar to that on BMW’s latest 3 Series convertible.
