Silverados boast among the most powerful engines in the truck segment. General Motors also claims that its V8s are most efficient, thanks to Active Fuel Management (AFM), though our experience with AFM has been disappointing after drives in the Silverado, Avalanche and Tahoe. Engines are mated to GM’s four-speed automatic, but you do get your choice of a seven engines. There’s a 4.3-liter V6 rated at 195 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque; a 4.8-liter making 295 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque; and a 5.3-liter FlexFuel engine with AFM that gets 315 horsepower and 338 lb.-ft. of torque. There are three different of aluminum or iron block variants to this engine. For even more power – and maximum towing -- there’s a 6.0-liter V8 with AFM that makes 367 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque.
