We drove a standard Rondo LX with the four-cylinder engine and an EX loaded with leather, a V6 and all the trimmings. Neither powertrain stunned us with its acceleration, but both got up to freeway speed without drama, and we had no trouble passing slower traffic. Both the four-speed and five-speed automatics feature a manual shift gate. We tried it in both models, and quickly decided that just leaving the transmission in “Drive” was the best option. The manual function works as well as most mechanisms of that type, but the Rondo doesn’t inspire manual shifting. Left on their own, the four and five speeds downshift readily, but the five is notably more refined in its operation.
