TO THE POINT What’s New? Replacing the Echo in Toyota’s lineup is the 2007 Yaris, a much better subcompact with ample room, power, style, and pump-bustin’ fuel economy
Selling Points: Fuel efficiency, design, interior room, ride and handling, sedan and hatchback styles
Deal Breakers: No tachometer on the hatchback, engine noise, potentially more roomy and powerful vehicles from competitors
Our Advice: You’ll want the 2007 Toyota Yaris when you drive it, but also consider the Honda Fit and the Nissan Versa.

Click to enlarge. 2007 Toyota Yaris Model Mix Whether you’re looking for a new car under $12,000 or interested in moving up to a sportier subcompact, the 2007 Toyota Yaris offers a choice in two well-equipped vehicles.

No matter which version of the 2007 Toyota Yaris you prefer, you’ll get a well-equipped vehicle at a competitive price. Aside from body style and the starting sticker, there are significant interior styling and material differences between the Yaris sedan and hatchback models. The sedan, for instance, gets the benefit of what feels like higher grade materials and better instrument panel lighting. This is because the two models were designed separately, the hatchback in Europe and the sedan in Japan.

Sticker prices start at $11,530 for the Yaris hatchback, $12,405 for the sedan and $13,905 for the sedan S model, all including the $580 destination charge. Each gets a healthy dose of standard features, starting with a capable 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is available – tag on an extra $900 to add the automatic to the hatchback, and $725 for the sedan. Standard safety features include driver and passenger front airbags and a rear center-seat head restraint. Options include seat-mounted side airbags and antilock brakes.

Comfort and convenience features include air conditioning, power steering, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent windshield wipers, vanity mirrors, and cupholders both front and rear. All Yaris models come standard with P175/65R14 tires on 14-inch wheels. Four-way adjustable front seats are offered in the hatchback; sedan buyers will also enjoy height adjustable front seats. Other differences are in rear seating configurations: the hatchback gets a fold-down rear seat, while the sedan offers a fixed rear seat. Storage compartments are also different, the hatchback getting driver and passenger glove compartments, while the sedan uses a center console compartment in addition to a traditional glove box.

For an extra $1,500, buyers can move up to the 2007 Toyota Yaris S sedan, which offers 15-inch wheels with P185/60R15 tires, a CD player with MP3 capability and an input jack, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Styling is enhanced with front and rear spoilers, side rocker panels and different badges.

Two main option packages are available: Convenience and Power. On the hatchback, the Convenience Package includes a CD player with MP3 capability and input jack, 15-inch wheels, a rear defroster, and a rear wiper. Sedans with the Convenience Package also get a 60/40-split folding rear seat, but do without the rear wiper. The hatchback’s Power Package adds power windows, doors and mirrors, as well as a 60/40-split rear seat that folds flat, slides and reclines. The sedan’s Power Package includes these items but adds antilock brakes, a tachometer, and special interior trim. Options for the 2007 Toyota Yaris include remote keyless entry, 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and fog lamps. Fully loaded, expect the Yaris to sticker for just over $16,000. The Sedan S, fully loaded, will have an MSRP of about $16,800.
