Let’s talk about the skyrocketing cost of fuel, which is hitting post-Katrina levels at the pumps. What’s it gonna take, people? In southern California, regular unleaded is three bucks a gallon, while the Los Angeles Times reports that local refiners are making twice as much money now as they used to. Oil companies are raking in billions of dollars in profits, American soldiers are dying in the Middle East, Iran’s standing on the doorstep of nuclear armament, and the weather is downright terrifying. Yet, here we are, cruising around in our SUVs without a care in the world and with no intention of ever going off-road, lest dust coat our nice and shiny 22-inch spinners. Get a grip. Consumer debt is at an all-time high, interest rates are rising, the planet is changing, and expensive gas is here to stay. If you’re not driving something that averages 20 mpg, you need to reconsider your priorities.
