2016 Dodge Viper Buyer's Guide

While there have been convertible versions of the Viper in the past, the contemporary model (introduced in 2012 as a 2013 model) is offered only as a closed coupe. Another significant difference between the current iteration of the Dodge supercar and its predecessors is the amount of attention paid to ease of driving and creature comforts. The 2016 Dodge Viper Coupe is easily the most civilized version of the Dodge hypercar ever offered. Now, before you’re led to believe this serpent’s fangs have been blunted, please allow us to assure you that the Viper’s incisors are thoroughly intact—the snake’s still got a lot of bite in it. And yet, its interior is more nicely finished and the 2016 Viper is considerably more forgiving to drive.

What makes it move?

Power comes from a handcrafted all-aluminum 8.4-liter, mid-front-mounted V10 overhead-valve engine, featuring an ultra-high-flow lightweight composite intake manifold; high-strength forged pistons; sodium-filled exhaust valves; high-performance exhaust system catalysts designed specifically to ease backpressure, and an aluminum flywheel engineered to reduce reciprocating losses. The engine is approximately 25 percent lighter than the unit it replaced in the 2010 Viper. Output is 645 horsepower and 600 ft-lbs of torque. Rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission complete the powertrain. Quoted top speed is 206 MPH.

Why buy the 2016 Dodge Viper?

For those for whom the idea “enough” is something of a nebulous concept, we submit the 2016 Dodge Viper Coupe. Yes, we said the car is now more comfortable and easier to drive; however it should be noted that this is relative to previous Viper models. Compared to other cars, the Viper is ludicrously insane—in a good way. It’s fast, yes. It also handles as if it is Velcro-ed to the road, stops like it hit a brick wall, and accelerates as if it has the Space Shuttle’s solid rocket boosters strapped to its rear. Meanwhile, several new features like the driver selectable suspension system add a fresh measure of civility to the Dodge’s crazy, making the exotic sports car somewhat more comfortable in the process.
