2016 FIAT 500 Buyer's Guide

With a history of cuteness going all the way back to 1957, when the Fiat Cinquecento (Italian for “500”) was originally introduced, the model returned to the USA when Chrysler and the venerable Italian firm joined forces. Primarily considered a city car, the spunky little 2016 Fiat 500 has a ton of style, delivers reasonable fuel economy, and is perfectly sized to deal with any obstacle an urban environment might place in its path. Offered in both hatchback coupe and convertible formats, the Fiat 500 also comes in a higher performing Abarth trim (also offered in hardtop and convertible bodies), lending it an added quality of sportiness, as well as a wonderful exhaust note. Over one million copies have sold around the world since 2007.

What makes it move?

The 2016 Fiat 500 is offered with a choice of three different engines. Base models get a 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 101 horsepower and 97 ft-lbs of torque. The front wheels are fed by a six-speed manual transmission in the standard configuration. A six-speed automatic is optional. Turbocharging the 1.4 makes 135 horsepower and 150 ft-lbs of torque. For the Abarth iteration, 160 horsepower and 170 ft-lbs are derived from the turbocharged 1.4. Transmission choices and drive wheels are the same as the base model’s.

Why buy the 2016 FIAT 500?

One simple fact of modern life is that fuel costs are rather significant. Cars like the Fiat 500 permit economizing, while also catering to a certain sense of style. In other words, with the 2016 Fiat 500 you can look cool while you’re also doing the right thing for both the environment and your wallet. Plus, you’ll enjoy driving it too. Bear in mind, though, that the Fiat is a city car. While it’s pretty stable on the Interstate and readily achieves highway speeds, it’s happiest doing its thing bopping around town. As a city car, the Fiat 500 has few rivals. This is also true of the diminutive Italian’s fun factor. If cute is as cute does, the Fiat 500 has pretty much cornered the market.
