2016 GMC Canyon Buyer's Guide

Here it is folks, the state of the art midsize pickup truck. All-new for the 2015 model year, the 2016 GMC Canyon truck is one of the newest midsize pickups on the market today. Originally introduced in 2004, returning to the marketplace after a three-year hiatus, the General revitalized the Canyon with a thoroughly 21st century take on what a small pickup truck should be about. Given that most people shopping in this category use their trucks like a car, the Canyon drives more like a car and offers more car-like features than ever before. Given the paucity of competition in this segment, you’d think GMC would’ve been tempted to simply go for a base hit rather than swing for the fence. Instead, it went for it.

The 2016 GMC Canyon offers a choice of two brand new engines. The 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 ft-lbs of torque. A six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard; a six-speed automatic and four-wheel drive are options. The upgrade is a 3.6-liter V6 good for 305 horsepower and 269 ft-lbs. The six-speed automatic is the only V6 transmission offering. Rear-wheel drive is standard; four-wheel drive is optional. The four is good to tow 3,500 pounds, while the six can handle 7,000.

Why buy the 2016 GMC Canyon?

One of the most impressive aspects of the 2016 GMC Canyon is the suite of active safety technologies specified for the mid-size pickup. Forward collision and lane departure warning systems are available, as are emergency crash notification and stolen vehicle notification. GMC offers the Canyon with a choice of two cab styles and two box lengths, although the long bed is available only with the crew cab. Other features include 4G LTE WiFi, Siri Eyes Free voice controls, OnStar, automatic climate control, and remote start. An off-road-oriented suspension system is available along with an automatic locking rear differential and hill descent control. Yes, Canyon may be small in size, but it’s big feature-wise. Heated front seats, keyless entry, and cruise control are also fitted.
