2016 Mazda CX-3 Buyer's Guide
When it comes to building affordable, fun to drive cars, very few automakers can match Mazda. New for the 2016 model year, the company’s CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV drives more like a small sport sedan than a crossover sport utility vehicle. Blessed with a tidy size, a willing engine, and excellent road manners, you’re likely to drive this one just for fun—even if you lack a specific destination. First shown at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, the CX-3 fills what was a gap in the Mazda lineup just below its mid-size CX-5 crossover. Small enough to be readily maneuverable in the city and capacious enough to support a road trip, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 SUV will readily meet a broad range of needs.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, which is good for 146 horsepower and 146 ft-lbs of torque. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission offering. Front wheel drive completes the standard powertrain configuration, and all-wheel drive is offered as an option. According to the EPA, you can expect 29 miles per gallon in the city, 35 on the highway, and 31 combined—using the front-wheel drive powertrain. With all-wheel drive, the numbers come in at 27 in the city, 32-highway, and 29 combined.
Why buy the 2016 Mazda CX-3?
The 2016 Mazda CX-3’s standard features include automatic headlights, a dual exhaust system, variable intermittent wipers, pushbutton ignition, full power accessories, and air conditioning. As options, the Mazda CX-3 SUV offers a Bose seven-speaker audio system, blind spot monitoring, heated exterior mirrors, an Active Driving Display, text to speech messaging capability for both sending and receiving, and voice controls—along with Bluetooth audio streaming and telephone connectivity. Advanced safety features include lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, a rear view camera, Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian and obstacle detection, as well as Mazda Radar Cruise Control. While the subcompact crossover segment seemingly expands every year, so far very few models have successfully offered the precise blend of attributes found in the 2016 Mazda CX-3 SUV.
