2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV Buyer's Guide
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a five door, four seat hatchback electric car that was first produced in 2009, and first sold here in 2011, with some changes for the 2014 model year. Models sold here are stretched and widened compared to versions sold elsewhere, though even with its battery pack, the i-MiEV is fairly svelt with a curb weight of only 2,579 lbs. Even so, its 66 horsepower isn’t enough to make it quick (the run from 0 to 60 miles per hour takes well over 10 seconds). Handling is fairly normal, and the i-MiEV mostly drives like a regular car. The i-MiEV is capable of highway speeds, but it struggles to keep up and higher speeds reduce economy significantly.

What makes it move?
The i-MiEV is propelled by a watercooled Y4F1 AC synchronous permanent magnetic motor with a redline of 9,990 RPM. A single speed fixed reduction gear transmission features a final gear ratio of 7.065:1. Total power is 66 horsepower and more importantly 145 lb-ft of torque. Power is supplied by a 16 kWh 330 volt battery with forced air ventilation and a battery heater for cold weather charging. Charging time at 120V is 14 to 22 hours depending on whether the 12A or 8A setting is used, while 240V charge time is 6 hours at 15A. The iMiEV also features a CHAdeMO DC quick charge port. Total range on a charge is 98 miles in the city and 62 miles in mixed driving.
Why buy the 2016 Mitsubishi i-MiEV?
The i-MiEV is one of the cheapest electric vehicles on the market. Standard features include electric air conditioning (and cabin heating), heated front seats, power windows, front and rear intermittent wipers, and rear LED combination tail lights. A navigation package is optional, and includes an MMCS Navigation System with 2 annual Mapcare updates, a Fuse handsfree link system with USB port, and steering wheel audio and handsfree switches. An LED illumination package includes blue floor illumination, and LED map lights and room light, though the headlights remain halogen units, which is unfortunate for an electric car where every watt counts. The i-MiEV comes with a 5-year or 60,000 mile limited powertrain warranty and an 8-year or 100,000 mile warranty on the battery.
