2016 Nissan Frontier Buyer's Guide
The Nissan Frontier is something of a throwback to an earlier age of body-on-frame mid-size pickups. All but extinct these days, save the Frontier, this method of construction endows Nissan’s robust hauler with outstanding torsional rigidity, which makes it an excellent choice if your proclivities include a significant amount of driving off road. Of course this also means the current design has been around since long before the Obama administration. While some might see this as a detriment, it does also mean the Nissan Frontier is a proven design—some might even say it’s venerable. Lest you think Frontier’s longevity means it’s woefully outdated, think again. Nissan has taken great pains to keep the Frontier equipped with cutting-edge comfort and convenience features.

What makes it move?
Power comes from a choice of two engines. The base powerplant makes 152 horsepower and 171 ft-lbs of torque from a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder configuration. A five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive come standard. A five-speed automatic is optional. If you prefer four-wheel drive, you’ll get the 4.0-liter V6 with 261 horsepower and 281 ft-lbs of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, a five-speed automatic is offered as an option. Rear drive is also offered as an option for certain trims of the V6-powered Nissan Frontier. The Frontier’s maximum tow rating is set at 3,500 pounds with the 2.5-liter and 6,000 pounds with the 4.0-liter.
Why buy the 2016 Nissan Frontier?
The Nissan Frontier’s unpretentious interior treatment is very straightforward in its layout. Meanwhile, features such as Bluetooth, handsfree text capability, and smartphone application integration prove Nissan is quite adept at teaching its old dog new tricks. The 6.1-foot “long” cargo bed endows the Frontier with considerable utility when it comes to hauling—and is available with the four-door crew cab. As we mentioned above, if you’re into four-wheeling and you want a mid-size pickup, the Frontier (as its name implies) loves traversing trails, slogging through mud, and scampering over rocky outcroppings. Nissan offers two trim packages specifically intended to improve the Frontier’s prowess in those situations.
