2016 Nissan Maxima Buyer's Guide

Nissan’s styling team has taken a decided step towards polarization with several products in the current lineup. The latest of its models to reflect this is the Nissan Maxima. Highly angular, with a bold grille somewhat reflective of the marque’s trucks and SUVs, the Nissan Maxima’s exterior design is a definite standout. On the other hand, the interior treatment should find universal consensus, as it is at once handsome, driver focused, and thoughtfully laid out. The wraparound design is said to be reflective of the jet fighters flown by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels aerobatics team.

What makes it move?

The Nissan Maxima’s engine is a 3.5-liter V6 good for 300 horsepower and 261 ft-lbs of torque.  A two-position drive mode selector  (normal and sport) is fitted to permit the driver to select the desired throttle response, transmission tuning, steering feel, and Active Sound Enhancement tuning. In the sport mode, engine throttle response increases, and the Xtronic transmission programming changes for more aggressive shifting under braking and gear holding; the steering weight increases, and the Active Sound Enhancement system further amplifies the engine note in the cabin. So what is an Xtronic transmission? The term is Nissan-speak for a continuously variable transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 22 in the city and 30 on the highway.

Why buy the 2016 Nissan Maxima?

Reviving the “4DSC” (four-door sports car) tagline, the Nissan Maxima is also said to be an aggressive performer. Given Nissan’s penchant for delivering in this regard (read GT-R, 370Z, and even Juke) the Maxima has quite a family pedigree to live up to. Further, as Nissan’s flagship, you’d expect the Nissan Maxima to be comprehensively equipped. Those expectations are met. Navigation is standard equipment across the board; and operated through an eight-inch touchscreen configured to support smartphone like gestures such as swiping and pinch to zoom. Other available features include a heated steering wheel, remote start, a power rear sunshade, and active noise cancellation. The Nissan Maxima also offers two USB ports in a media bin sized to accept iPhone 6 Plus.
