2016 RAM 1500 Buyer's Guide

The RAM 1500 is a full-size ‘half-ton’ pickup, available in a wide variety of cab (Regular, Quad, and Crew), box (5’7”, 6’4”, and 8”), and drive (4x2 and 4x4) configurations and trim levels (including Tradesman, Big Horn, Sport, Outdoorsman, Laramie, and Rebel). The cabin features high-quality materials, and thanks to its coil spring suspension, the RAM rides almost like a car, even when unloaded. The Uconnect systems are the best on the market, and the available multiview dial cluster with 7-inch color screen lets you choose which information to display. All RAMs feature a rotary E-shift transmission selector, which replaces the traditional lever. The RAM was last redesigned in 2009 and updated in 2013, and we expect the gasoline engines to see some updates for 2017.

The RAM 1500 is available with a choice of three engines. The base engine is a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 that makes 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, with a max towing capacity of 7,600 lbs. The optional 5.7 liter Hemi V8 with Fuel Saver Technology generates 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, and has a max towing capacity of 10,650 lbs. The available 3.0 liter EcoDiesel V6 pumps out 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and has a max towing capacity of 9,200 lbs. All engines are backed by Torqueflite 8-speed automatic transmissions.

Why buy the 2016 RAM 1500?

The RAM 1500 is a thoroughly modern pickup. On most models, Active Air Grille Shutters open to cool the engine, and close at highway speeds to improve aerodynamics. The optional air suspension lowers automatically at highway speeds to reduce drag and increase efficiency, and is useful for leveling the truck when hauling heavy loads or towing. The system also allows the driver to manually choose one of five different ride height settings to raise or lower the vehicle. The RAM offers other features to help when towing, including an integrated trailer hitch with four and seven pin wiring connectors, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control+ (TSC). Rear-wheel drive HFE models with the EcoDiesel are rated at 29 miles per gallon on the highway. All RAM 1500s are backed by a 5-year or 100,000 mile Powertrain Limited Warranty.
