2016 Toyota Highlander Buyer's Guide
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a 5-door mid-size crossover SUV with 8 seats and a hybrid powertrain. The Hybrid is only available in the Limited trim level, which means that it’s nicely equipped, but not a bargain. The interior is refined and outside noises are well-muted. Considering the SUV’s size, the first two rows of seatings are quite spacious, but the third row is best suited to small children. While the hybrid powertrain increases the horsepower output, it also adds over 350 lbs to the vehicle’s curb weight, more than offsetting the increase in power compared to the normal V6 (though improving fuel economy considerably). This generation of the Highlander was first introduced for the 2014 model year.

What makes it move?
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is powered by a 24-valve 3.5 liter DOHC V6 with variable valve timing and two electric motors (one in the front and one in the rear) that work in conjunction to create 280 total system horsepower. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission with a sequential shift mode sends power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is activated using the electric motor in the rear; there is no mechanical link from the transmission to the rear wheels. Energy for the electric motors comes from a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Fuel economy is rated at 27 miles per gallon in the city and 28 on the highway, for a combined 28 mpg.
