2016 Toyota Tacoma Buyer's Guide
Not to be outdone by the new slate of mid-size pickups hitting the market, Toyota has reworked its venerable Tacoma model to keep pace with the evolution of the marketplace. While stopping short of a complete redesign, Toyota’s engineering team did inject quite a number of improvements. The suspension system has been reworked to improve handling, ride quality, and off road capability. The interior has been reworked to incorporate a new center stack featuring a touchscreen interface for entertainment, smartphone and navigation applications. Outside, the sheetmetal has been resculpted to more closely reflect the angular styling language embraced by Toyota these days. To improve overall rigidity—key to improving handling — more high strength steel, as well as ultra high strength steel is incorporated.

What makes it move?
The Toyota Tacoma uses a 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine as its base powerplant. Power is directed to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 option is a 3.5-liter, which can be had with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Power output and fuel economy ratings have yet to be quoted for either engine. The offroad ready TRD Tacoma models feature a multi-terrain system, which gives the diver the ability to preselect performance parameters for dealing with mud, sand, or rocks. There’s a crawl mode to retard throttle inputs during low speed maneuvers requiring a deft touch, along with a limited slip differential and a locking rear differential.
Why buy the 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
If your days include a lot of off road driving, the newly revised Toyota Tacoma promises to be an excellent platform for dealing with the conditions you’re likely to encounter. Further, Toyota’s product planners have developed configurations designed to make Tacoma excel as a work truck, and of course the ever-present SR5 package will bring a number of desirable comfort and convenience amenities for those who prefer a touch of civility as well. Finally, Toyota Tacoma is one of only two body-on-frame models in the mid-size pickup truck class, and is easily the more sophisticated of the two.
