2016 Volkswagen Touareg Buyer's Guide
The VW Touareg is a 4-door mid-size two-row luxury crossover SUV that is closely related to the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. First introduced in 2011, the second generation Touareg received a few updates in 2015, while for 2016 the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices have dropped across the board, making the Tiguan slightly better value. The previously range-topping Hybrid model is no longer available, but the even more fuel-efficient TDI is still around (fuel economy for diesel models is a highly respectable 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 highway, for 24 mpg combined). Towing capacity is a maximum of 7,717 pounds, which is impressive for a mid-size unibody vehicle.

What makes it move?
The Touareg is available with either a 3.6-liter gasoline-powered VR6 or a 3.0-liter turbocharged TDI diesel engine (which, so far at least, has not been implicated in any emissions related issues). The gasoline unit uses a 12:1 compression ratio and direct injection to make 280 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, while the diesel unit makes 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque thanks to its turbocharger and 16.8:1 compression ratio. Both engines use an 8-speed automatic with Tiptronic, Dynamic Shift Program (DSP), and sport mode to send power to all four wheels via Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.
Why buy the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg?
The Touareg is available with a multitude of different wheel options, including 18-, 19-, 20-, and 21-inch models. LED taillights are standard on all models, as is white LED overhead lighting. Executive models come with a 620 watt Dynaudio sound system with 10 premium speakers and the Area View 360 degree exterior camera system with four cameras. The 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system features a Torsen limited slip differential that splits torque 40 percent front and 60 percent rear for traction both on and off-road. The Touareg is rated Good in all tests by the IIHS, and all models come with Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System (which shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights if the car is involved in certain types of collisions).
