2016 Volvo XC90 Buyer's Guide

For the first time since it was introduced back in 2003, an all-new version of the Volvo XC90 flagship SUV has been introduced. Of course, given the myriad of strengths demonstrated by the model, it was still pretty solidly in the game. With that said, this new XC90 is well ahead of the game with bold new styling, an exceptional array of comfort, convenience, luxury, and safety features; and a remarkably powerful 300+ horsepower four-cylinder (yes, you read that correctly—four-cylinder) engine.  The high-quality interior treatment is rife with wood, leather and genuine carbon fiber accents. What’s more, as is to be expected of a Volvo, a host of cutting edge safety tech is front and center in the new Volvo XC90’s portfolio of attributes.

What makes it move?

At launch, power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline four-cylinder engine good for 316 horsepower and 295 ft-lbs of torque. The all-wheel drive powertrain uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city, and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. While those numbers might sound rather paltry in these days of 30-mpg autos, bear in mind the XC90’s engine is generating the power of a V8 to propel a curb weight of some 4,394 pounds. Volvo also has plans for a plug-in hybrid version with 400 horsepower and the capability of traveling up to 25 miles on electric power alone.

Why buy the 2016 Volvo XC90?

In addition to the all-new look, and the more efficient powerplant, there’s also an all-new body structure. Cargo capacity is 15.8 cubic feet behind the third row, and 85.7 cubic feet in total. The seven-passenger Volvo XC90 offers a handsfree power tailgate, four-zone automatic climate control, navigation, leather, and a panoramic sunroof—all as standard equipment. Debuting on the XC90 is Volvo’s Run-off Road protection, which tightens the seatbelts to hold passengers in place if the SUV experiences undue suspension system impacts. Forward collision warning and collision mitigation (including pedestrians and bicyclists) are also fitted as standard equipment.
