2016 BMW 6 Series Buyer's Guide

The 2016 BMW ALPINA B6 Gran Coupe is a limited-production version of the 4-door BMW 6 Series designed to provide high-performance luxury. More powerful and faster (in a straight line at least) than an M6, the B6 is perfectly at home cruising the Autobahn at speeds that would see you arrested here. The B6 is designed to stop as well as it goes, with massive 14.7 inch front brakes and 14.6 inch rear brakes that are surrounded by classically designed ALPINA wheels. With its specially designed front apron and integrated splitter, it looks good in any color, but we’d choose the exclusive ALPINA Blue Metallic. This latest generation of the 6 Series was introduced in 2012, and given a facelift in 2015.

What makes it move?

The ALPINA B6 is powered by a 4.4 liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine with direct injection and variable valve control that makes 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive all-wheel drive system is used to send power to all four wheels via an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC. The run from 0 to 60 miles per hour is dispatched within 3.7 seconds, and fuel economy is rated at a surprisingly decent 15 miles per gallon city and 24 highway, for a combined rating of 18 mpg.

Why buy the 2016 BMW 6 Series?

Alpina models have traditionally been more luxurious than the M models, while still being more powerful than BMW’s regular models. In that vein, the car features an exclusive ALPINA exhaust system with a deep but unobtrusive note in normal conditions that becomes nicely raucous when in SPORT mode. The Adaptive Sport Suspension allows for a choice between a sporty or comfortable ride, and Active Roll Stabilization helps reduce lean when cornering. For a truly high-end environment,  the optional Bang & Olufsen Surround Sound system includes enhanced soundproofing, 16 speakers, and 1,200 watts of power, while the Executive Package includes a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade and rear side window shades, and ceramic controls.
