2016 BMW i3 Buyer's Guide

The BMW i3 is a 5-door 4-seat electric car that is made largely of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic. First introduced as a 2014 model, the i3 (along with the i8) might forecast the future of the BMW brand. Thanks to the characteristics of electric motors, the i3 accelerates briskly from a stop, and its small size means that it is easy to maneuver and has a tight turning circle, though grip isn’t as high as you might expect from a modern BMW. The interior is calm and quiet, with only some tire and wind noise (unless you are hard on the accelerator, when some motor noise becomes noticeable). The i3 has not been crash tested by either the IIHS or the NHTSA.

What makes it move?

The BMW i3 is powered by an electric motor that produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a single speed automatic transmission. Power for the motor comes from 360 volt 22 kWh lithium-ion battery bank, which provides a range of 80 to 100 miles in comfort mode (12% higher in Eco Pro mode and 24% higher in Eco Pro + mode). A full charge takes 3 hours with a 240V 32 amp Level 2 rated charger, and an 80% charge can be provided in less than 20 minutes with a 50 kW DC fast charger.

Range extender versions get a 647 cc 2-cylinder engine that produces 34 horsepower and 40 lb-ft of torque. With its 1.9 gallon fuel tank, range is increased to 160 to 180 miles.

Why buy the 2016 BMW i3?

The i3 was designed to be environmentally friendly, and the sustainable thinking goes beyond its electric powertrain. For example, it uses recycled materials, open-pore eucalyptus wood from certified forestry, and olive leaf-tanned leather. Unlike most other cars, regenerative braking is activated as soon as you release the accelerator, which seems odd at first, but quickly becomes intuitive. The i3 without the range extender is one of the most efficient cars on the road, rated at 137 MPGe in the city, and 111 on the highway, for a combined rating of 124 MPGe (25 kW-hrs/100 miles city, 30 highway, for a combined 27), while models with the range extender are slightly less efficient because of the added weight.
