2016 Ford Focus Buyer's Guide

A true world car in every sense of the phrase, Ford offers the Focus, or some version of the Focus, in nearly every market in which the company does business. In fact, back in 2012, the Ford Focus surpassed its key competition to become the world’s best-selling nameplate, and has remained so for each of the ensuing years. Thoroughly made over for the 2015 model year; new exterior styling, a revised interior treatment, new infotainment and safety systems, as well as a new ultra-efficient engine option were applied. In other words, all of the qualities making it great were improved upon with this latest iteration of the car Ford introduced back in 1998. As a result, the 2016 Ford Focus pretty much stands pat.

An annual favorite among critics, the feisty little Ford Focus earns this admiration with a high quality interior treatment, a strong roster of standard and available features, and great fuel economy. Ford offers the delightful Focus compact in both sedan and hatchback formats. For the 2016 model year, changes include the Sync 3 touchscreen interface, endowing the perky little Ford with Bluetooth and voice activation. The Sync 3 system also responds more quickly than the previous MyFordTouch infotainment solution applied to the car. The innovative 1.0-liter turbocharged engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission for the first time, and a few of the option packages have been mildly reshuffled. And yes, Focus remains just as much fun to drive as it has always been.

The Ford Focus is an affordable compact car that seats five passengers and is available as both a sedan and a hatchback. Both body styles offer similar configurations. Three engines and five trim levels are available with the 2016 Focus, ranging from the base model to the performance-tuned Focus ST hatchback. The Ford Focus wagon is an important model in the brand’s lineup. When the Focus lineup was introduced, it helped Ford re-establish itself as a sporty, efficient and affordable brand. Over the years, the Focus has remained a solid seller and has been available in several different body styles. The current generation of the Ford Focus has been on the market since the 2012  model year, and there are few changes for the 2016 model.

What makes it move?

The base engine is a 160-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder delivering 146 ft-lbs of torque. It’s offered with a five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, while a six-speed automated manual is offered as optional equipment. However, the six-speed is standard equipment with Titanium models. The frugal engine is a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder fitted to the Focus SE EcoBoost. This one delivers 123 horsepower and 148 ft-lbs of torque. Meanwhile, the hatchback Focus ST’s 252-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder makes 270 ft-lbs of torque, both use six-speed manual transmissions exclusively.

Three highly efficient powertrains are offered with the 2016 Ford Focus. The base engine is a 2.0-liter inline four, with 160 horsepower and 146 ft-lbs of torque. The engine is offered with a choice of a five-speed manual, or a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The optional engine is a 123-horsepower turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 148 ft-lbs of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard with the 1.0-liter; a six-speed automatic is optional. The versatile 2016 Ford Focus is also offered with an electric powertrain.

The 2016 Ford Focus offers three drivetrains. The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 160 horsepower and comes with a five-speed manual or six-speed automated manual gearbox. Next up is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 123 horsepower with the help of a turbocharger, and comes with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. For 252 horsepower, opt for the Focus ST hatchback, which has a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed manual gearbox.

With features like self-parking, voice activation, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane departure warning, the Ford Focus stands toe to toe with industry heavyweights. The Focus offers sporty driving dynamics, courtesy of its well-engineered handling and powerful brake system, and the top-of-the-line Focus ST performance hatch has impressive power output. For the best fuel economy, stick to the base engine, which provides fuel economy of up to 26 mpg city and 38 mpg highway when paired with the CVT gearbox. Inside, the 2016 Ford Focus offers comfortable seating and is finished with high quality materials.
