2015 Ford Fusion Buyer's Guide

The Ford Fusion Energi is an elegant looking midsize plug-in hybrid sedan whose exterior has drawn comparisons to models from Aston Martin ever since its 2013 refresh. The Energi model has decent electric range, gets good fuel economy, and has decent performance. The Fusion is fun to drive for a hybrid, with a supple ride and agile handling (though not quite up to Aston Martin standards). The upscale cabin is roomy and attractive, with average passenger space. Cargo space and fuel capacity suffer to make room for the batteries. Taller drivers may want to skip the sunroof, as it can eat into headroom. The Ford Fusion gets good crash ratings from the Insurance Institute for High Safety, except in the small overlap front test where it is rated as acceptable.

The Fusion Energi is powered by a 2.0 liter Atkinson cycle 4 cylinder engine with a 12.3:1 compression ratio that puts out 141 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque through an electronic continuously variable transmission (an eCVT). The system also includes an 88 kW permanent magnet AC synchronous motor for a combined system output of 188 horsepower (195 horsepower in ‘Charge Depletion Mode’). The battery pack is lithium ion and holds 7.6 kWh. The electric top speed is around 85 mph, and EV range is 19 miles. The Fusion Energi is rated at 95 MPGe city, 81 MPGe highway, and 88 MPGe combined.

Why buy the 2015 Ford Fusion?

All Fusions come standard with a rear view camera (in advance of the NHSTA requiring all cars to have them by 2018), but Fusion Energis come with the MyFord Touch system that includes a larger 8 inch screen. The Fusion is the first vehicle in its class to get optional inflatable rear safety belts (in the outboard positions), which help distribute crash forces across the torso. The available Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping System, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Collision Warning, as well as Active Park Assist can help prevent accidents and fender benders. Automatic high-beam headlamps are optional and automatically switch between high and low beams as necessary. Drivers in colder climates will appreciate the heated front seats and available heated steering wheel, while seat cooling is also available for those in warmer climates.
