2016 Ford Mustang Buyer's Guide
Based upon the freshly redesigned Mustang GT, the 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is the latest in a long line of tire shredding Mustangs to bear the name of the legendary Carroll Shelby. Given the association, this new Shelby GT350 has some pretty big shoes to fill, as the last generation supercharged Shelby Mustang held the title of the most powerful series production car ever offered—and remains one of them to this day. For this latest model though, the engineering team has bypassed forced induction in favor of just straight up old school normally-aspirated “there’s no replacement for displacement” power. Further, a number of other modifications have leveraged the stiffer body structure and independent rear suspension system applied to the newly redesigned Ford Mustang.

What makes it move?
Power comes courtesy of a 5.2-liter V8 making 526 horsepower and 429 ft-lbs of torque. Employing a flat-plane crankshaft, the engine runs at significantly higher revolutions per minute, enabling it to extract more power without increasing displacement. As a result, the 2016 Ford Mustang GT350’s V8 has an 8,200-RPM redline. Further, there is a lot more development room for Ford’s engineers with the application of features like direct fuel injection to the production version of the engine—in all probability for the inevitable Shelby GT500.
Why buy the 2016 Ford Mustang?
Given the lowered ride height, bigger brakes, additional cooling capacity, and available magnetorheological dampers, it’s a safe bet that the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 will be the most potent version of the model ever offered. While the mods seem geared primarily towards making the Shelby Mustang a star on the track, our previous experience dictates that the car will absolutely shine on the street too. Proof of this lies in the fact Ford is offering a GT350R version with carbon fiber wheels, an exceptionally aggressive aero kit, and a delete option for the A/C, rear seat, audio system, and tire inflator. In other words, Ford has gotten very serious about making the Mustang a significant force to be reckoned with—both on the street and the track.
