2016 Jeep Compass Buyer's Guide
The Jeep Compass is a 5 passenger compact crossover SUV that was first introduced as a 2007 model, and then refreshed for the 2011 model year and again in 2014. Closely related to the Patriot, the Compass is available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, including Trail Rated versions that are capable of some fairly serious off roading, unlike most crossovers. The NHTSA gives the Compass three stars in the frontal crash test and four stars in the rollover test, while the IIHS rates the head restraints & seats as Good. Towing capacity (when properly equipped) is 2,000 lbs, decent for a vehicle of its size. A brand new Compass should be available sometime next year.

What makes it move?
The Compass is available with a few different engine and transmission options; a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine twists out 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque while a slightly more powerful 2.4 liter 4-cylinder can churn up 172 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. Transmission options depend on the engine, but include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, and a Continuously Variable Transmission. The 2.4 liter engine is nearly as economical as the 2.0 liter unit, especially with the manual transmission.
Why buy the 2016 Jeep Compass?
Standard features are few and far between, especially on base models, though fairly typical for the class. Air conditioning is standard, and heated seats are standard on all but the base model. Higher trims get leather-trimmed seats, while Katzkin Black Leather by Mopar is optional on other models. A 6.5” touchscreen and a 9 speaker Boston Acoustic sound system are available. For those who like to tailgate, some models feature optional Articulating Liftgate Speakers. All-wheel drive versions with the Freedom-Drive II Off-Road Group get a 4-Wheel Drive Off-Road Mode, skid plates for the engine and transmission oil pans and fuel tank, Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, tow hooks, and a Trail Rated badge.
