2016 Jeep Patriot Buyer's Guide
The Jeep Patriot is a 5 passenger compact crossover SUV that was introduced as a 2007 model, and then updated for the 2011 model year. Closely related to the Compass, the Patriot is available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. Trail Rated versions are capable of some off roading, unlike nearly every other modern compact SUV. Base models are inexpensive, but the base trim level is very basic, and doesn’t include air conditioning, automatic windows, or central locking. The Patriot is rated Good by the IIHS in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats tests, but Poor in the small overlap front test, while the NHTSA scores it three stars in both the frontal crash and rollover tests.

What makes it move?
The Patriot is available with a couple of different engine options. A 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine produces 158 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque while the 2.4 liter 4-cylinder can make a slightly more respectably 172 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choice depends on the engine selected, but include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, and a Continuously Variable Transmission. As expected, front-wheel drive versions are slightly more economical than all-wheel drive versions, but the larger engine is almost as frugal as the smaller one.
Why buy the 2016 Jeep Patriot?
Depending on your needs, the Patriot is available in front-wheel drive or with one of two available all-wheel drive systems. Models equipped with the Freedom Drive II 4WD system are Trail Rated, and feature a selectable locking Off-Road mode with Hill Descent Control. The system can handle on and off road conditions, including deep snow, mud, and up to 19 inches of water. All models come with Active Head Restraints, Hill Start Assist, Speed Control, and an Audio Jack Input. For tailgaters, Articulating Liftgate Speakers are optional on higher end models, as is a 9 speaker Boston Acoustic sound system with subwoofer.
