2016 Kia Rio Buyer's Guide

The Kia Rio is a 5 passenger subcompact car, available in both 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback models. Introduced for the 2012 model year, the Rio receives some minor updates for 2016. Tweaks to the front and rear ends help improve the car’s already good looks and help it fit in better with the rest of Kia’s lineup. Interior changes include slightly better looking materials in places and additional sound insulation, which should make for a quieter ride. The inside is a bit tight (even in 5-door models), and the Rio is not particularly sporty (and not nearly as athletic as the car’s looks might suggest), but even base models are well equipped for the price.

What makes it move?

All Rios are powered by a 1.6 liter inline 4-cylinder motor that is capable of 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque, thanks to Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing and Gasoline Direct Injection. The base sedan model comes standard with a 6-speed manual, while all other models feature a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for automatic models is 27 miles per gallon city, 38 highway, and 31 mpg combined, while models with the manual transmission or the ECO Package with the Idle Stop & Go system are rated slightly better.

Why buy the 2016 Kia Rio?

Base model Rios include an AM/FM/CD/MP3/SiriusXM Satellite Audio System with USB/Auxiliary input jack, steering wheel mounted audio controls, air conditioning, and a trip computer. Optional or standard on higher end models are a 6-speaker sound system, the UVO eServices Infotainment System, the Active ECO System (standard on all 5-door models), and leather seat trim. The top of the line SX model includes heated front seats, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, Voice-Command Navigation with 7” Color Touch-Screen Display, the Supervision Meter Cluster, and Push-Button Start with Smart Key. The 2016 Rio is rated 4 stars in the frontal crash test, 5 stars in the side crash test, and 4 stars in the rollover test, and 4 stars overall by the NHTSA.
