2016 Kia Soul EV Buyer's Guide

Heading into its second year of production, the electrifying (or, said more accurately) the electrifIED Kia Soul gets a new variant for the 2016 model year. Kia’s first mass-market zero emissions, battery electric vehicle captures everything people love about the standard Kia Soul and laces it with the relatively guilt-free experience of eco-conscious motoring. But wait, there’s even more in play here on the “green” front; Underwriters Laboratory has honored the 2016 Kia Soul EV with an environmental validation for the model’s innovative use of 52.7 lbs. of bio-based organic interior content.  Bio-based plastics derived from cellulose and sugar cane are found in the door panels, headliner, seat trim, roof pillars and carpeting.  In all, organic, bio-based materials are used in 19 different interior parts.

What makes it move?

The Kia Soul EV boasts an EPA estimated range of 93 miles. The 27kWh Lithium Ion Polymer battery pack stores energy for the electric motor under the Kia’s floor. The 2016 Kia Soul EV’s 81kW electric motor produces the equivalent of 109 horsepower and 210 ft-lbs of torque. A full recharge takes around five hours from a 240v source, although the fast charger can get the battery pack to 80 percent of capacity in 30 minutes. Level 1 and Level 2 charging ports are standard.

Why buy the 2016 Kia Soul EV?

Stashed behind a sliding door in the 2016 Kia Soul EV’s “grille”, the dual charging ports offer flexibility and increase the Soul EV’s go-anywhere appeal. They also make it more convenient to charge the battery pack whether inside your garage or when you’re out on the road. Standard EV-specific features include a DC fast charge port, a 6.6-killowatt onboard charger, a 3.5-inch OLED Supervision cluster, Kia’s smart key with push-button start, and a driver-only ventilation function for closing the passenger HVAC vents to maximize efficiency based upon occupancy.  The Soul EV-e also includes heated front seats. The 2016 Soul EV’s telematics suite supports the ability to search for charging stations, remotely check the state-of-charge, and pre-heat or cool the Kia’s interior with your Smartphone.
