2015 Kia Soul Buyer's Guide

Sure, the 2015 Kia Soul built its reputation on a funky fresh style and some helpful hamsters, but don’t be fooled. The Soul is just as functional as it is fun to own, offering more versatility and cabin space than many traditional vehicles—both cars and crossovers—of the same subcompact size. Of course, that being said, this is one funky ride, standing out even in the notably well-designed Kia lineup, and it’s still plenty fresh, too, since this current-generation model debuted as an all-new entry for the 2014 model year. For this one, two more Special Editions also debut, including the Red Zone 2.0 Soul, dressed in black with bold red trim inserts, and the Caribbean Blue Soul, with the expected shade outside and matching blue accents in the cabin.

What's the difference between trims?

What makes it move?

The Soul rolls with a standard 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission, with that powertrain providing 130 hp and 118 lb.-ft. of torque and further offering an available six-speed automatic for those who prefer two-pedal transportation. Additionally, the automatic can be matched with a bigger four-cylinder engine that displaces 2.0 liters to deliver 164 hp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. As a bonus, that bigger engine also is the more fuel-efficient one, albeit while peaking at 31 mpg highway

Why buy the 2015 Kia Soul?

Imagine a dance party on wheels, complete with available speaker lights that change color and pulse with the music, and you’ve got a good idea of what the 2015 Kia Soul can offer customers. But at the same time, the Soul also serves up more than 61 cubic feet of cargo space, along with sterling safety marks: The current model has earned both a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick Recognition from IIHS—and there’s only one other subcompact in the industry that can match that IIHS score.

So, while the heart of the Soul may be its dynamic design, it also offers an all-around package so impressive it was named one of the 2015 Best Cars for Families by “U.S. News & World Report.”
