2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata Buyer's Guide
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is universally acclaimed as the world’s favorite two-seat sports car. So much so, the diminutive Mazda Roadster (as it is known in Japan) became an instant cultural icon when it was introduced back in 1989. Since then, each successive model has added more in the way of comfort and convenience (including a power retractable hardtop configuration) and yet, the Mazda Miata remains true to its original concept of making the driver one with the automobile. Further, the MX-5 Miata proves a sports car can be an absolute delight, even while eschewing insane amounts of horsepower—as long as its chassis is engineered to deliver outstanding agility. Further, Miata proves driving fun and strong fuel economy can co-exist. With Miata, you get “miles” and “smiles” per gallon.

What makes it move?
Power comes from a 155-horsepower 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 148 ft-lbs of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual- and a six-speed automatic transmission to route the engine’s output to the rear wheels. Fuel economy, while typically not a major concern of drivers in this category (and seemingly manufacturers) is rated at an exceptional 30 miles per gallon overall – with either the six-speed manual transmission or the six-speed automatic. Situated low in the chassis, and positioned decidedly rearward, the engine contributes to the roadster’s low center of gravity, and moves its polar moment of inertia more toward the middle of the car to help its agility.
Why buy the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
Achieving its entertaining performance potential in part through light weight (the current Mazda MX-5 Miata is some 150 pounds lighter than the model it replaces), this is a remarkably sophisticated little car. Further, if you look closely, you’ll see no other builder offers anything like the Mazda MX-5 Miata at its price point. To get a rear-drive two-seat convertible from any other company, you’ll be looking at considerably more money. Fun, affordable, and remarkably reliable, the Mazda MX-5 Miata works as a daily driver, a weekend autocross car, and a road racer as well.
