If you’ve been paying attention to the van market, you’ve observed old-school body-on-frame truck-based vans are on the wane. Instead, a whole new wave of lightweight, unit body, exceptionally fuel-efficient models—vans having more in common with cars than trucks—are taking over the commercial van industry. Thanks to the success of its full-size Sprinter, Mercedes-Benz has added a smaller commercial van to its U.S. lineup. Larger than the small vans, and smaller than the large vans, the mid-size 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris minivans supplanted the Mercedes-Benz R-Class in Europe. Marketed here this year as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris, the model has been called “Vito” in Europe since 1996. Configured for passengers, the minivan is called “Viano” over there. Together, the two comprise the Mercedes-Benz V-Class.

What makes it move?
Power for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris van comes from a 208-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 258 ft-lbs of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission will rout the output of the engine to the rear wheels. While there are diesel engines with all-wheel drive powertrains available for the V-Class minivans in Europe, initially, the US markets will get the 2.0-liter four and rear-wheel drive only. To boost fuel efficiency, the engine is fitted with the Mercedes-Benz ECO automatic stop/start function. EPA figures have yet to be announced.
