2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Buyer's Guide
There was a time in the relatively recent past when the small roadster was thought all but dead in the USA. Of course, things change. So much so, the small roadster is today a mainstay in every one of the German manufacturer’s stables. OK, well, the ones desiring to be taken seriously as purveyors of sporting automobiles, at least. The Mercedes-Benz in this segment is the SLK-Class Convertible. Currently in its third generation, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Convertible was the first model in this category to feature a retractable hardtop when it launched back in 1998. Having matured considerably over the years, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Convertible resembles its SL-Class sibling so closely it can occasionally be difficult to tell them apart at a glance.

A trio of sophisticated powerplants are prescribed for the US versions of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Convertible. The base engine is a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 201 horsepower and 229 ft-lbs of torque. The middle offering is a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower and 273 ft-lbs of torque. The top offering is a 415-horsepower 5.5-liter V8 with 398 ft-lbs of torque. The 1.8 can be had with a six-speed manual transmission; all three direct injection engines are offered with a seven-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive.
Why buy the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class?
The folding hardtop actually makes the SLK-Class function as both a closed coupe and a convertible. When the top is deployed, it’s just as quiet and secure as any hardtop two-door can be. The optional Magic Sky Roof uses electrochromic technology to lighten and darken the glass panel in the roof at the touch of a button. Leave it clear to let the sun shine in, make it opaque to keep the sun out. In cooler weather, activating the Airscarf feature pipes heated air over your shoulders and neck to fight the chill, enabling you to run the SLK-Class Convertible open in cooler weather. Similarly, the Airguide reduces wind intrusion into the 2016 Mercedes-Benz’s cabin, further enhancing the pleasure of driving with the roof retracted.
