2016 Scion iA Buyer's Guide

The Scion iA is a four-door subcompact sedan that shares its underpinnings with the Mazda2 (which is no longer available here). New for 2016, the car is quite good looking for its class (though the front end styling is a matter of personal preference), and a major step up from Toyota’s previous subcompact entries. Though it can feel a bit lethargic off the line, the iA isn’t terribly slow when wrung out, and is surprisingly fun when driven to the limit thanks to its accurate steering and 6-speed manual transmission (both sourced from Mazda, which might help explain their zoom-zoom qualities). Ride quality is good, and the interior is quiet, but rear legroom is a bit cramped.

What's the difference between trims?

  • 7-inch touchscreen display audio
  • Bluetooth connectivity

What makes it move?

The iA is powered by a 16-valve 1.5 liter 4-cylinder engine with direct injection (which allows for a compression ratio of 12.0:1). The mill produces 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque, and power is sent to the front wheels by either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy with the manual transmission is 31 miles per gallon city and 41 highway, for a combined 35 mpg. Automatic models do slightly better, at 33 mpg city, 42 highway, and 37 mpg combined.

Why buy the 2016 Scion iA?

Like most Scions, the iA comes in only one trim level, and the only available factory installed option is the automatic transmission. Features include remote keyless entry, push button start, a tilting and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, 16 inch alloy wheels, and a 7 inch touch screen audio system with Bluetooth and two USB ports featuring iPod connectivity. Safety features include Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, a Low-speed Pre-collision System, Brake Override System, and a first aid kit. The iA also comes with 2 years or 25,000 miles of Scion Service Boost, which includes 24-Hour Roadside Assistance, mailed service reminders, and factory-recommended maintenance services  using Genuine Scion Parts.
