2016 Subaru Crosstrek Buyer's Guide
Fun to drive, capacious, and exceptionally capable, the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek comes to market once again with both standard and hybrid powertrains. It also gets a cosmetic refresh for the 2016 model year. Changes include a new front fascia, new headlights and a new grille treatment. For added differentiation, the Hybrid gets a gloss black finish for its new grille. Gasoline models get new 17-inch alloy wheels, while the interiors of the upper trim level models get orange stitching on the door armrests, center console, shift lever handles, and the newly redesigned steering wheel. Nighttime LED illumination has also been added to the center console under the radio for an added touch of class. If you’ve followed this model for a while you may have noticed the XV designation has gone away. For 2016, Subaru refers to the vehicle only as the Crosstrek.

What makes it move?
Powertrains carry over from the 2015 model year; so the base engine is 148-horsepower 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder with 145 ft-lbs of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive are standard equipment. A continuously variable transmission is offered as an option with upper trim level models. The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid combines the 2.0-liter four with an electric motor to increase output to 160 horsepower and 163 ft-lbs of torque. It, too, uses the continuously variable transmission. Fuel economy with the gasoline engine and the CVT is rated at 26 miles per gallon in the city, 34 on the highway and 29 overall. The five-speed manual returns 23-city, 31-highway, and 26 combined. The hybrid is good for 30-city, 34-highway, and 31 combined.
Why buy the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more faithful companion if you live in an area with exceptionally inclement weather. The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is also one of the few compact crossover sport utility vehicles genuinely capable of holding its own in off-road situations. What’s more, on dry pavement, the Crosstrek is a delight to drive, displaying outstanding agility, solid road holding, and a comfortable ride to boot—considering its size and capabilities. Go with the Crosstrek Hybrid, you’ll get all of the above, plus more power and better fuel economy.
