2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI Buyer's Guide
The VW Golf GTI is a hot hatch (though not quite as hot as the more powerful Golf R) that is available in both 2-door and 4-door body styles. The GTI excels in multiple areas; featuring a winning combination of a powerful engine with a broad torque band, good handling, and a smooth ride (especially with the DCC adaptive suspension system), the GTI is a car that can be enjoyed every day. The interior uses quality materials, there is plenty of legroom (even in the back), and the cargo area is spacious and easy to access. The GTI is rated 5 stars overall in crash testing by the NHTSA, and Good in every category by the IIHS.

What makes it move?
Under the hood of all Golf GTIs is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Normal models put out 210 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while models with the Performance Package make an extra 10 horsepower. Either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic DSG with Tiptronic sends power to the front wheels. Fuel economy with the manual transmission is 25 miles per gallon in the city, 34 highway, for a combined rating of 28 mpg, while the automatic does 1 mpg worse on the highway, but matches the manual everywhere else.
Why buy the 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI?
All GTIs come equipped with a sport-tuned suspension, Top Sport seats, ambient door trim accent lighting, an advanced 6.5” touchscreen sound system with VW Car-Net App-Connect, and 60/40 split folding rear seats (which help the hot Golf provide up to 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space when lowered). Optional features include the DCC Dynamic Chassis Control system, a panoramic sunroof, and the Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control system. The Lighting package adds Bi-Xenon headlights and an Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) that moves the lights as you turn, while the Driver Assistance package adds Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist). Models with the performance package get larger brakes and a limited slip differential to better harness their extra power.
